Scholarship Opportunities

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships are for student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and are in their final season of intercollegiate varsity athletics competition and plan to pursue a graduate degree. Each sports season (fall, winter, spring) there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. If you are interested in applying for one, you must see Dr. Kennedy, AC 103, by the start of your final competition season.

Qualifications:

  • Student-Athletes who are participating in their final season of athletics competition
  • Have an overall undergraduate minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.200 - 4.000
  • Have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which achievement will be weighed along with academic performance, university involvement and volunteer community service
  • Intend to enroll in a graduate degree program
  • Be an outstanding citizen

Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship
The Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship committee is looking for one male and one female student-athlete to receive a $24,000 postgraduate scholarship. If you fulfill the criteria below, you can contact Dr. Kennedy in the Bratzke Center. The award is usually due in the middle of January. See Dr. Kennedy in December, if you are interested in this award. You must be nominated through our University.


CRITERIA for the Walter Byers Scholarship
  • Have an overall undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a 3.5 or better
  • Have competed in intercollegiate athletics as a member of a varsity team at an NCAA member institution
  • Be a graduating senior or be enrolled in graduate study at an NCAA member institution
  • Have intentions of applying for admission into a graduate degree program at a properly accredited, non profit educational institution or into a post baccalaureate professional degree program at a professionally accredited law school, medical school, or the equivalent, without restriction as to the national site of the institution
  • Be committed to work on a full-time basis toward a graduate degree or toward a post baccalaureate professional degree
  • Have evidenced superior character and leadership
  • Have demonstrated that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on the nominee's personal and intellectual development. Relative success in athletics is important but not of overriding significance; and
  • Enroll into a graduate degree program within five years of being named a Byers Scholar.

NCAA Ethnic Minority & Women's Enhancement Program


The NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Programs announces scholarships in the amount of $6,000 are available to ethnic minorities and women who are interested in pursuing an advanced degree in a sports-related field.  The NCAA awards 13 scholarships to ethnic minorities and 13 scholarships to women college graduates who will be entering the initial year of postgraduate studies.  The applicant must be seeking admission or have been accepted into a sports administration or other program that will help the applicant obtain a career in intercollegiate athletics, such as athletics administrator, coach, athletic trainer or other career that provides a direct service to intercollegiate athletics.
